In 2013 I began working with ceramics. I enjoy the sculpting qualities of water based clay, how it holds texture, and the excitement of turning mud into rock. When working with clay, I feel connected to the past (as you repeat a process practiced for thousands of years), the future (as once fired, a piece can last thousands of years), and to the earth (from where the clay comes).
My ceramic work is stoneware clay fired in a kiln. Most of the finishes are not paint, but rather traditional treatments, such as oxide washes and glazes, melted onto the clay in the kiln.
Most of my busts are ceramic. While the time spent sculpting one of my ceramic pieces ranges from under an hour to several days, ceramic work needs several weeks to go through the drying, initial firing, coloring, and final firing stages.
